“Important Pre-Application Updates: Navigating Changes in the Canadian Study
Visa Process”

In recent years, Canada has become an increasingly popular destination for international students seeking high-quality education and diverse cultural experiences. As part of its commitment to maintain a welcoming environment for students from around the world, the Canadian government periodically reviews and adjusts its immigration policies, including financial requirements for study visas. Prospective students planning to pursue their education in Canada should carefully review and understand the updated financial requirements. Adequate financial planning is crucial to ensure a smooth application process and successful visa approval. It is advisable to consult with the Canadian embassy or consulate in their home country for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Increased Financial Requirements

In response to evolving economic conditions and to ensure that students have sufficient financial support , the Canadian government announced a doubling of the GIC requirement. As from January 1st, 2024, the new GIC requirement is set at CAD $20,635.

What is GIC?

GIC full form is the Guaranteed Investment Certificate. To be qualified for a study visa in Canada, all international students must provide 'proof of funds' of one year's worth into a Canadian bank account. A GIC is an investment scheme that lasts for a year and is suitable for students eligible under the SDS program.

Recent changes regarding GIC in Canada:-

On December 7, 2023, IRCC announced and increase in GIC requirements for international students. Earlier Guaranteed Investment Certificate Cost was $10,000 CAD. The GIC Canada Increase Rule is imposed from 1st January 2024. As per this rule, all the international students have to secure the investment of $20,635 CAD. This means that starting January 1, 2024, students who apply for studies through Student Direct Stream must have at least 20,635 Canadian Dollars in addition to their 1st year's travel and tuition costs.

Expected CAP on number of International Students for Fall 2024

The global higher education landscape has witnessed a significant rise in the number of international students seeking education abroad. However, recent discussions have raised concerns about the need to establish a cap on the number of international students admitted for Fall 2024. The Canadian government wants to ensure that the colleges or the universities take full responsibility of the students basic needs like accomodation and part time job opportunities and the intake's don't get deferred after the students reach Canada

Reasons For The Cap

Capacity Constraints:- One of the primary reasons for proposing a cap is the strain on educational institutions' capacity to accommodate a large influx of international students. Overcrowded classrooms, limited housing options, and stretched resources can compromise the quality of education and the overall student experience.
Ensuring Domestic Opportunities:- Implementing a cap on international student admissions can help ensure that domestic students have equitable access to educational opportunities. By reserving a portion of the available seats for domestic students, educational institutions can prioritize the needs of their own citizens and address concerns about competition for limited resources.

Enhancing Integration:- A cap on international student enrolment can contribute to better integration and cultural exchange. By limiting the number of international students, institutions can focus on providing comprehensive support services, fostering a sense of community, and promoting cross-cultural understanding among students from diverse backgrounds.

Extension of Full Time Work Policy

A Step Towards Economic Growth and Well-being!! Under Immigration , Refugees and Citizenship Canada's (IRCC) new temporary public policy, most study permit holders are now permitted to work than 20 hours per week off campus till April 30, 2024.
Canada recognizes the importance of stable employment for both its citizens and temporary residents. The full-time work policy is designed to encourage a thriving job market, economic growth, and a skilled workforce. Full-time employment is generally defined as working a standard number of hours per week, often around 30 to 40 hours.

Can an international student work for more than 40 hours in Canada on work permit?

Yes, international students can work more than 40 hours in Canada if their work permit specifies that they are able to work here. However, there may be some specific requirements. For example, some jobs on campus are only open to full-time students.

PGWP Extension to Distance learning measures

The distance learning policy that was implemented during the Covid-19 scenario , where the students could study a part of their program online is still being implemented. This is applicable to all the students, whose program starts before September 1st 2024.
Condition:- Online study duration should be less than 50 % of the program study duration.

What is PGWP?

Post-graduation work permits are open work permits given to international students who graduate from a Canadian program of study. PGWPs allow the holder to work for any employer, for as many hours they wish , anywhere in Canada.

What students should not do in order to get PGWP?

You must complete at least 50% of your program inside Canada . The time spent studying online from outside of Canada before August 31,2024, will count toward the length of your PGWP as long as it constitutes less than 50% of your program of study.

What colleges after programs that are eligible fro PGWP?

Starting September 1, 2023, there will be changes to post-graduation work permit (PGWP) eligibility for certain programs at some DLIs. To apply for a study permit, you need an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI). A DLI is a school approved bya provincial or territorial government to host international students. All primary and secondary schools in Canada are designated learning institutions. They aren't included in this list. If you plan to attend a post-secondary school, make sure it is on this list.

You need to know if you are eligible to work after you graduate. Not all designated learning institutions and not all programs of study make you eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program. The table below will let you know if your designated learning institution offers programs that will make you eligible for a Post- graduation work permit.

For more information about the colleges that are eligible for  PGWP please check the official website of Government of CANADA and search for Designated Learning Institutions List. If the institute is eligible then in the column of "Offers PGWP eligible Programs" YES will be given otherwise NO.

No Further PGWP Extensions to Expire Work Permit Holders
For international students who have completed their studies in Canada, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) has long served as a valuable bridge between academic life and a career in the Canadian workforce. However, recent developments indicate that the option for further PGWP extensions is no longer available, bringing about a significant change in the landscape for work permit holders.
the Canadian government had implemented measures allowing international graduates to extend their PGWPs, providing them with additional time to gain valuable Canadian work experience. However, in recent times, the government has shifted its approach, signaling the end of further PGWP extensions for certain work permit holders.
The cessation of further PGWP extensions is undeniably a significant change that has implications for international graduates in Canada. However, with strategic planning and exploration of alternative immigration pathways, individuals can navigate this transition successfully, ensuring their continued contribution to the Canadian workforce and their pursuit of a fulfilling life in Canada.

In the meantime , the 18 month PGWP extension that was granted due to the Covid 19 breakout will not be extended any further for anyone whose PGWPs are expiring after December 31, 2023.

For anyone , whose PGWP has just expired or is expiring December 31, 2023; there is a good news that you are eligible for an 18 month extension as per the old policy.

Can an International student stay in Canada after my work permit expires?

You can apply to restore your work permit in the first 90 days after it expires. If you do this, you can stay in Canada until you get further instructions, but you must stop working until  you receive your restored work permit.
